Hawthorne School Picnic and Open HouseThe Hawthorne school picnic and open house is Tuesday September 8 from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on. Shuttle runs 5:35-5:50 and 7:45-8:00. 4 Year Old KindergartenBecause early childhood education is so important to our county, on March 4, the Dane County League of Women Voters will sponsor a comprehensive look at the potential for 4-year-old kindergarten in Dane County. The forum is called Does 4-year-old kindergarten make sense for Dane County? A panel of experts with extensive experience in the field will discuss the how's and why's of 4-year-old kindergarten. The panel includes: Madison School Superintendent Dan Nerad; Connie Haessly, principal of Taylor Elementary School in the Monona Grove School District; Deborah Lyons-Zaber, assistant principal and reading teacher, also Monona Grove; Wendy Rakower, executive director of the Red Caboose Day Care Center; and Joanna Parker, executive director of The Learning Gardens. Schools of HopeThe fourth annual Multicultural Dinner to support Schools of Hope is Thursday March 5 at Schenk Elementary 6:00-7:30 pmNeighborhood / School SignThe Hawthorne Neighborhood Association was awarded a grant to help fund a sign at school that can be used by the neighborhood and the school as a message board for activities and events. The students will be working on the mosaic artwork for the project. We will need volunteers of building materials and labor. We hope to involve the school and neighborhood as well as school families and East High school students and local businesses. They have an on-line form on their website.S.P.A.R.CHawthorne Elementary is proud to introduce the S.P.A.R.C. bag program for 2008! S.P. A.R.C. stands for School, Parent, and Reading Connection. Not only does the program aim to make learning fun and exciting, it is designed to encourage families to play an active role in this process.Our families are invited to enroll their elementary school age child in the program each year. Once enrolled, the child is eligible to "borrow" a special backpack for a two week period several times a year. The backpacks contain books at many reading levels for all members of the family, a game or other toy, and other activities that share a common theme. Some themes found in the K-3 bags are: sports, weather, families, animals, dinosaurs, insects, space, the dark, food, and many others!
